Thurgood Finds a Home

Many of you may remember following little Thurgood's story on Facebook and many of you donated to this little fella's care. On Jan. 23 this little terrier mix was found outside the shelter on the side of the road, clearly severely injured and wearing a home-made splint on one leg.

After an initial exam, we asked for help raising money to have Thurgood's leg x-rayed. You all came through for little Thurgood, and off he went to the vet's office. Unfortunately the splinted hind leg was damaged beyond repair, the other hind leg had a fracture, and his pelvis was fractured in two places. He had likely been run over by a vehicle.

Thurgood's right hind leg could not be saved, and he underwent an amputation. The veterinarian felt that given good care and lots of rest, his other bones would heal. We did our best to keep Thurgood comfortable, but we knew this little guy really needed a relaxed environment where he could recover.

Thankfully a family came forward and offered to foster Thurgood until he had recovered well enough to be adopted. The two other small dogs in their home must have known Thurgood was hurt and so they were on their best behavior, being very friendly and very gentle with him. He settled right in and within a few weeks his amputation wound had healed and his other bones were healing too.

You probably know the end of this story! Thurgood was just such a great fit for this family of stay-at-home parents, with no human kids, and two little dogs -- that he got adopted last week! So this little guy is in his forever home getting all of the love and care that he deserves.

We want to extend a big thank-you to everyone who donated to Thurgood's care -- our shelter budget can't handle veterinary and medical expenses above and beyond routine care of the cats and dogs in our care -- so donors like you allow us to do right by the animals that grace our doors. If you would like to make a donation to help us continue our lifesaving work, you can donate here: http://www.southernpinesanimalshelter.org/donate.
