EmBark Transport Program
How the Program was Created
1952 - Southern Pines Animal Shelter was founded with a special focus on serving Hattiesburg and the surrounding communities.
2011 - Because there simply aren’t enough homes for all the pets in Mississippi, Southern Pines began to transport animals north for adoption. The program started small, but it was the beginning of something big.
2012 - Southern Pines joined the Rescue Waggin’ transport partnership, and developed close partnerships with local shelters and rescues to get even more animals transported north for adoption.
2013 - Southern Pines Animal Shelter, in partnership with other local shelters and rescues, transported nearly 3000 animals to northern shelters using Rescue Waggin' and other programs.
2016 - Rescue Waggin’ ceased operations. Rather than scale back, Southern Pines utilized the invaluable funding, experience, knowledge, and contacts that PetSmart Charities and Rescue Waggin' provided and continued helping homeless animals across Mississippi.
