Help Southern Pines collect 3,000 cans
of food for our puppies & kittens!

June 21st - July 19th
Visit Our AMAZON WISHLIST!
During the spring and summer months, we see a dramatic rise in the amount of young and neonatal puppies and kittens coming into our shelter.  To help keep these precious, little ones happy, healthy, full and developing as they should, we go through A LOT of canned food.

 We need YOUR help!
2021 has already seen hundreds of underage kitties and pups pouring into the shelter.  We're meeting lots of new super cute faces every day, and the truth is that kitten season isn't even half over yet.

One of our biggest challenges in caring for underage pets, is having enough canned food on hand to feed all of the hungry bellies we are caring for. With a BOOMING kitten and puppy season underway, it has been a particular challenge this year to keep our foster pantry stocked up.

With that in mind, we are hoping to collect THREE
THOUSAND cans of puppy/dog and kitten/cat food! We believe with YOUR help and the assistance of our generous community we can reach this goal.

We've partnered with several businesses and organizations in the Hattiesburg area who will serve as drop-off points for canned food collection. Scroll down for full list of participating locations, and check back as we add more drop-off points!

Thank you. Together "We Can Do It!", and together we can save more lives than ever before!

FAQ

Why do you need canned food? Can't you just feed the animals kibble?

Our shelter is very fortunate to have a partnership with Hill's Science Diet that provides nutritious cat and dog kibble for our animals at a reduced cost, and so the majority of our population receives this to eat. However, kibble is not always appropriate food for some of our residents--like underage puppies and nursing moms. Because they are not only feeding themselves, but also are responsible for the nourishment of other little lives, nursing moms require three times the amount of food they’d normally consume. So in order to do our very best for these dogs, we supplement their diets with canned food. Canned food is also extremely helpful in transitioning puppies from milk to solid food, and we have a bunch right on the brink of making that transition. The unfortunate reality is that without softer, canned food to help transition underage animals, to help keep nursing mamas healthy and nourished, to encourage sick animals to eat, or to help malnourished animals put on a healthy weight...many of these animals would not have a great chance of either recovering, staying healthy, or making it to an adoptable age.

What brand of canned food do you all use?

For puppies, any brand that has a pâté or ground texture would work just fine! However, in light of the recent canned food recall for certain brands made by the J.M. Smucker Company, we will not be able to use those brands/lots that are being recalled due to the obvious health concerns involved. For more information on what brands are affected, please visit: https://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/ucm597135.htm

For kittens, again any brand that carries the p
âté or ground texture. However, for weaning kittens, we've had the most success with the Royal Canin Babycat canned food as it helps even the most reluctant eaters transition to solid food.

Why do you ask for the pâté or ground texture?

Simply because it's easier to eat for animals of ALL ages, thereby giving it a wider versatility in the shelter setting.
