Job Title: Transport Technician
Reports to: Shelter Manager
Full time, hourly position. Possibility for irregular work hours that change from week to week.
Summary: Transport Technician is responsible for overseeing the general health, wellness, and cleanliness of the dogs and cats involved in the Southern Pines Animal Shelter Transport Program; communicating with Transport Coordinator about the program; setting up for pickup and drop off dates; maintaining the cleanliness and organization in all transport areas; and the routine maintenance and cleanliness of the transport vehicle.
Specific duties of the Transport Technician include, but are not limited to:

Summary: Transport Technician is responsible for overseeing the general health, wellness, and cleanliness of the dogs and cats involved in the Southern Pines Animal Shelter Transport Program; communicating with Transport Coordinator about the program; setting up for pickup and drop off dates; maintaining the cleanliness and organization in all transport areas; and the routine maintenance and cleanliness of the transport vehicle.
Specific duties of the Transport Technician include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee cleaning and care of transport room and other transport holding areas
- During morning cleaning time, all holding areas for transport animals should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
- Ensure all animals waiting for transport are in secure, appropriately-sized housing with comfortable bedding.
- Ensure all animals waiting for transport have water at all times
- Aid and observe morning cleaning of kennel area, cat and kitten cottages, and interior rooms when there are no transport animals to clean up after or when cleaning of transport animals is complete
- Assist with transport planning and follow-up
- Help with taking photos for upcoming transport lists
- Help with administering vaccines and medical care needed for upcoming transports
- Assist with SAFER assessments for upcoming transports
- Ensure animals on hold for transport have appropriate kennel signage and are clearly marked on the office board
- Ensure transport room is set up for incoming animals
- Greet partner shelters dropping off transport animals, and set them up
- Feed animals being dropped off for transport
- Assist veterinarian with health checks
- Help load transport animals (might require coming in before or after typical shelter hours)
- Clean and disinfect transport room immediately after transport animals depart
- Outcome transport animals in PetPoint
- Clean and disinfect crates and carriers after a transport returns
- Uphold the values and mission of shelter in all actions and communications with rescue/shelter partners, the public, and other staff members
- Maintain transport vehicle
- Ensure transport vehicle receives regular maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, etc.)
- Clean transport vehicle after each transport
- Ensure bungees and straps stay in good working order
- Keep a log of van maintenance
- Working with volunteers
- Remember that volunteers donate their time, talent, and energy and are not compensated monetarily for their contributions
- Make a commitment to train volunteers: orient them to assigned area, assign work, answer questions, and assist with their needs
- Greet all volunteers that you see, and thank them for their help. Make them feel like they’re part of the team
- Be mindful of your communication around volunteers; keep internal conversations internal, and only involve volunteers in the conversation when appropriate
- Build relationships with volunteers. Volunteers with an emotional connection will continue to volunteer with us
- Provide feedback to volunteers when they do something well
- Offer encouragement, training, and constructive correction if you volunteers break protocol. Feedback should be non-confrontational and specific
- Request volunteer assistance when you need it by asking volunteers
- Request volunteer assistance ahead of time by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator
