Essential transport duties
- Be knowledgeable about and follow all EmBark transport protocols, guidelines, and policies
- Foster and strengthen relationships with partner shelters to ensure the continued success of the EmBark transport program; always be kind and courteous to representatives of other organizations
- Support the safe and humane transport of animals on a timely schedule to ensure proper placement
- Safely operate the transport vehicle during day and night hours
- Prepare the route and vehicle for transport
- Assist with the loading and unloading of animals
- Ensure all animals onboard are correctly labeled and match the count, description, and names on the manifest at loading and unloading
- Monitor appetite, hydration, stools and vomit of animals on the transport vehicle
- Provide food, water, and bedding for animals in accordance with established procedures
- Perform spot cleanings on the transport vehicle
- Complete basic preventative maintenance checks
- Notify Transport Operations Coordinator of any van issues, needed maintenance, equipment, monitors, etc. for the transport vehicle
- After unloading, do a preliminary clean of crates to remove newspaper, towels, and other debris
- Assist in training volunteers to complete tasks in your department. Offer constructive feedback and corrections when necessary. Escalate ongoing issues or incidents to Community Engagement Manager or available member of management.
Schedule and Attendance
- Required to be on time to scheduled shifts during operational hours which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Responsible for accurate and timely recordkeeping
- May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events
- Attend and participate in regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings with direct supervisor
Work Environment
- Environment will be predominately in the vehicle and on the road
- Out-of-state trips are typically completed with a companion driver
- The vehicle will be at times loud, crowded, dirty, wet, and have strong odors
- May be exposed to extreme weather conditions including but not limited to cold, heat, rain, and snow when outside and on the road
- Exposure to zoonotic diseases and pests such as fleas and ticks
Qualifications
- Experience:
- Vehicle operation experience is required
- Animal handling experience is preferred
- Skills:
- Must be able to problem solve and work under general instruction while on the route
- Proficient with technology, specifically a working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft products
- Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of sitting
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. unassisted and 100+ lbs. assisted
- Emotional Demands:
- Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of humane euthanasia
- Transportation:
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
