Veterinary Technician - Job Description

Specific duties of the Veterinary Technician include, but are not limited to:
  • Perform ACO intake exams and manage temp room and ACO intake area
    • At all times, maintain the ACO intake and temp room; keep the area sanitized between each animal (including all counter surfaces, scale, and floor).
    • Responsible for morning cleaning of all animals housed in temp room
    • Perform exams on all ACO intakes; record all treatments and notes on intake exam form
    • Enter all ACO intakes into PetPoint before the end of the day
    • Place ACO intakes in appropriate housing; provide food, water, and bedding; indicate their location on the office board
    • Ensure all temp room cages and surfaces are clean and sanitized before leaving for the day
    • Ensure all animals housed in temp room always have fresh food, water, and bedding
    • Ensure all animals housed in temp room always have appropriate signage on their gate
    • Ensure that animals don’t remain in temp room housing beyond appropriate times 
    • Facilitate flow-through of all feral cats into TNR and Barn Cat programs in a timely fashion
  • Monitor health and wellness of all shelter animals
    • Assist Medical Director with all duties as requested
    • Administer morning meds (administer afternoon meds as needed)
    • Monitor all shelter animals for signs of illness, and report to Medical Director for further instruction
    • Carefully observe all animals with medical issues, on medication, or that are on a medical watch; document findings for Medical Director to review
    • Administer scheduled follow-up vaccinations for shelter animals; coordinate with Foster Coordinator to ensure all foster animals receive follow-up dewormer, flea and heartworm preventative, and vaccines on time
    • Collaborate with Foster Coordinator to ensure foster animals receive appropriate medications and/or medical evaluations in a timely manner
    • Coordinate with Medical Director to ensure all medical supplies are stocked
    • Provide basic emergency treatments for sick or injured animals
    • Perform basic diagnostic tests
    • Ensure all pertinent medical notes are entered into PetPoint for easy access
  • Perform other duties as needed; aid kennel techs and other staff with daily tasks when time allows
