2009 EVENTS BY MONTH

 October 2009   

October 24:  "Benji's Coming Home for Homecoming!"  Celebrity canine, Benji, will appear at the Southern Miss Homecoming game.  The Forrest General Hospital tent next to Eagle Funland will offer photos with Benji for the kids for a $5 donation. 

October 24:  "Barking for a Cure" is an annual dog walk at Kamper Park Walking Track and will suppor the Southern Pines Animal Shelter.  Benji and owner Joe Camp will make a cameo appearance to kick off the walk.  Registration is $5.  Call 601-543-5719 to pre-register or for more information.

 October 23:  Benji, along with his accomplished humans, Joe and Kathleen Camp, will be appearing and welcoming guests at the "Going to the Cats and Dogs" event at the Forrest General Support Services Building on S. 28th Ave. in Hattiesburg.  Come enjoy great food, live music, a doggie fashion show, and a fabouous auction. To register call FGH OnCall at 1-800-844-4445 and press 1 to order a ticket ($25). The event will benefit the Spay/Neuter Clinic of Southern Pines Animal Shelter. 

October 17:  FREE Rabies Clinic from 10 am - 3 pm for dogs and cats at the Kamper Park pavilion behind the Hattiesburg Zoo. Dogs must be well-restrained on leash and cats must be in cat carriers. The Humane Society of the United States is funding this great community service which is  being sponsored by Hattiesburg Animal Control and the Southern Pines Animal Shelter. 

October 10 and 17: Benji Off the Leash" is being shown at the Grant Theater with $3 ticket sales going to support the Spay/Neuter Clinic. Tickets are available at the door.

October 24:  "Walk for the Animals" - 10 am - 1 pm.  This event is Petal Middle School's 6th annual fundraising and educational event for the Animal Shelter.  This fun event is put on by the 7th grade ICT 1 class. Located at the amazing Petal Dog Park (first dog park in the state!)

September 2009

September 24: The Spay/Neuter Clinic held a second "Casanova Special" Neuter Day and "fixed" 56 male dogs and cats.  As in August, fees were only $28 and $43 for surgery including a free Rabies shot - thanks for grant funding. Unfortunately this grant money has run out so we don't have another Casanova Day planned at this time.  Thanks to all of the great volunteer s who stepped up to help on this busy day.

August 2009 

August 27: The Spay/Neuter Clinic held a "Casanova Special" Neuter Day and 57 dogs and cats were neutered.  Fees were only $28 and $43 for surgery including a free Rabies shot - thanks for grant funding. We had lots of great volunteer help this day that helped everything run smoothly.

July 2009

 

July 1:  The Spay/Neuter Clinic opens to the Public.  Surgeries are done by appointment only, so please call ahead to make your pet's appointment (601-544-5678).


July 7:  Spay/Neuter Clinic Open House from 4:30-7:00 p.m.  Please stop by, meet our trainers from the Humane Alliance in Asheville, N.C., meet our new vet, Dr. Anna White, and see the Clinic facility.

The Dog House will be on display.  Raffle tickets for the Designer Dog House will be sold on site and are available by calling Michelle Rose @ 601-266-5605.  All proceeds from the raffle go to benefit Southern Pines Animal Shelter.

T-Shirts will be sold on site and will also be available by order.  Download the order form by clicking hereThe large “implied” paw print is created with the names of all species of dogs.  The front pocket will be the orange paw with black writing.  Also on the back will be the shelter’s logo, ASID’s logo, and the sentence “paws for the cause.”  Profits from t-shirt sales are split between SPAS and the ASID chapter at USM.

6th Annual Fundraising Auction Benefitting

Southern Pines Animal Shelter

6:00-10:00 PM

Visit and tour the new Low-Cost, High Volume Spay & Neuter Clinic, see and buy beautiful art donated from Hattiesburg artists, eat great food, and learn more about the only real solution to the companion animal euthanasia problem nationally. All proceeds go to support the general operation of Southern Pines Animal Shelter.

The new Clinic, where the event will be held, is located at 5360 US Hwy 49 South, Suite 30.  That's in the old Hudson's building on 49 South, near the Beverly Drive-In.  As you're looking at the building from the parking lot, the clinic space is on the left end of the building.

Tickets are $25. Purchase tickets in advance by contacting Advanced Pet Care on Hwy. 98W (call 601-606-1449 for more information). Tickets will also be sold at the door on the evening of the event and include dinner.

March 24, 2009:  Dr. S. Bushby from MSU School of Veterinary Medicine to present "The Need and Benefits of a Low-Cost, High Volume Spay & Neuter Clinic" to area vets.  By invitation only.  Held at new Spay/Neuter Clinic facility from 6-10 p.m.



Saturdays - Come to the PetSmart store in Hattiesburg and meet some of our volunteers and adoptable dogs from 11:00 - 4:30

November 17, 2008 - HSUS Speaker:  "Lobbying 101" - a presentation related to animal cruelty in our area,HSUS' efforts to work with Mississippi legislators, and how we can help!  Free to the public

October 2008

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

October 11-24, 2008 - 2008 Hattiesburg Decorator Show House (1000 34th Avenue @ Lincoln Rd in Hattiesburg. This is a house that has been decorated "to the hilt" by 10 of Hattiesburg's TOP decorators. The purpose of the showcase is to raise money for Southern Pines Animal Shelter and USM Symphony Scholarship Fund. Show hours are 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday-Friday; 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday; and Noon - 5 p.m. on Sundays. Special events will be held during Evening Hours.

October 16th is National Feral Cat Day!

October 15, 2008 - Board of Directors Meeting at 6:00 pm at the Hattiesburg Public Library

October 28, 2008 - "Spooky Trails for Waggin' Tails." Kids trick-or-treat for a good cause; bring a donation for the shelter, meet animals available for adoption, and have fun time on the trail! On the Wilgus Walking Trail (next to Payne Center) on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi from 5:30-7:00 p.m. (sponsored by Delta Tau Delta)

September 17, 2008 - Board of Directors Meeting 6:00 pm at the Hattiesburg Public Library

September 25, 2008 - Member Party at the Keg and Barrel on Hardy St. in Hattiesburg from 5-7. Live music provided by the Hhattiesburg Community Steel Pan Band and appetizers provided by the Keg and Barrel. Come visit with other shelter members!

September 27, 2008 - Walk for the Animals sponsored by ICT 1 class of Petal Middle School from 11-2 at the Forrest County Multipurpose Center. The goal of this 5th annual Walk is to promote spay/neuter, responsible pet ownership,and support for local animal shelters. Festivities include an amateur dog show and kitty photo contest. Proof of Rabies is required. Check-in between 10:30 and 11 am. Bring your pets and children for a fun event to benefit the animal shelter. For more information go to www.petalschools.com

August 2, 2008 - Shelter representatives will attend the annual Mississippi Spay and Neuter Conference in Raymond, MS.

August 9, 2008 - Bellegrass Dog and Pony Show @ May Apple Park inside Oak Grove's newest and most unique community: Bellegrass. Local sponsors have teamed up to support Southern Pines Animal Shelter in the fight against pet neglect and abuse. They want to sponsor you and your pet to participate in the event, including an optional two mile walk with water bowls set up along the route, activities for you and your pet, pet vendors, free food, and an awards ceremony.
